Incredible Fun Despite Many Flaws
I feel the need to preface this review by saying that Fallout 3 is one of my favorite video games of all time.
In many ways Fallout 3 is a very broken game. It suffers from significant lag during some scenes, the game occasionally freezes up and requires a restart, your character can get stuck on virtual junk, forcing you to restart if you want to continue playing, certain AI characters occasionally fall to their deaths or simply disappear. In short, the game feels unpolished and rushed, and should have been subject to at least another month of play-testing and revision before being released. In addition the main quest in the game is both short and linear, neither of which are good things in a role-playing game.
But if you can get past that, Fallout 3 offers one of the most interactive and real-feeling experiences available in console gaming today. The world is enormous and open-ended, and it rewards you for straying off the path of the main quest, presenting a vibrant world full of unique characters and interactions. I put over 60 hours into my first play-through of this game, just picking random directions and going exploring until I ran into something interesting.
If you put time into this game and explore the world around you it will reward you, but if you want to rush through you'll be disappointed.
PROS:
Huge, vibrant world to explore
Interesting weapon & armor variety
Easy and intuitive controls
Engaging story
CONS:
Buggy AI
Occasional game-crashing freezes
Character can sometimes get "stuck" on terrain requiring restart
Main quest is extremely linear
CONCLUSION:
This game has a lot of faults, but I feel that the good qualities outweigh them. I loved this game, and have recommended it to everyone I know.
Fallout 3 Enter the Wasteland
First of all the fallout series began with the developer Interplay. They developed the first 2 games in the series. The highly regarded Bethesda Studios took over the project of Fallout 3. The backround of the story is set in around 1960. America has advanced in nuclear technology and is attacked. This leaves nearly the entire Nation in a Nuclear Holocaust. You start the game in an underground vault which served as a Fallout shelter for the people. Outside in the wasteland are hideously mutated creatures. It is a dangerous world to be exploring in.
GRAPHICS:
Bethesda Studios Created the Elder Scroll series including the Game of The Year winner Oblivion and Morrowind. Following the tradition of open world gameplay and the go wherever do whatever you want gameplay is Fallout 3. The game itself in terms of graphics is stunning. There are so many objects on the screen at once and houses and buildings are filled with assortments. Within all this polish are some issues as well. Coming across as floating rocks, Stiff character animations, and some slowdowns in the frame rate. Texture pop up can also be an issue. Non of these really take away from the overall experience.
Audio:
The sound design is also top notch. Voice overs are very well done too. Every gun sounds different in the game from the blast of a shotgun to the discharge of an laser Rifle. There are alot radio stations you can listen to. Which plays music from the 50s and also a violin station. The score adds to the suspense and high flying action with haunting music hitting at all the right times.
Gameplay/Controls:
One of the major selling points of the game is the V.A.T.S. or Vault Tech Assistant Targeting System. With a weapon equiped you simply target an enemy, select a body part, the watch the slow motion kill cam. This is where the game gets very graphic in terms of violence and blood. With heads exploding and organs falling out. Parents be warned THIS IS NOT A GAME FOR KIDS!!! The language is very harsh too. There is a huge selection of weapons and types. Anyone who played Oblivion should feel welcome here. You can finish the main quest in about 20-30 hours but exploring every thing will go well past 100 hours.
*****Be warned after completing the main quest the game ENDS you cant play anymore. So if you want to get the most out of the game try doing some side quests in between main objectives. They can be very rewarding*****
*****Also be sure to save often, while rare there are some game ending glitches. I would recommend having at least 5 saves per character and to save every to minutes to avoid this*****
Overall this game gets a 10/10 With the extra downloadable content coming in the future it adds more to the score.
fallout 3
Fallout 3 is pretty much i think is about strategy. You cant pass the mutants unless you got this. In this game there are various weapons and even weapons that you can make! I suggest to people to buy this game. its the most fun i had without even having xbox live.
Alright...No.
Ive been a huge fan of RPG's for quite sometime now. As I became older FPS games were getting really tired for me. Run and gun games seemed to easy and didn't require much...brain power. Alright, heres the deal. The game starts out AMAZING and then a huge downfall right after you leave Vault 101. Oblivion was the best RPG to ever come out, and im still playing that game today. Fallout 3 has so many flaws I turned it in 2 days after playing it (I also completed the main story within that period of time...8 hours of gameplay or something?) The main story isnt that long. The traveling system is just annoying. You have to walk 400 miles from one place to another while you get attacked constantly by a bunch of mutant monsters and what-not. This game looks like a MadMax type of genre, so why couldnt they add some cool vehicles with barb wire and metal shields like something out of DeathRace/MadMax? You have to walk alllll the way back and forth from place to place to get something done. The game is besically, go to point A and do this and then return to point B. This game is getting so many great reviews and ratings its unbelieveable. Im sorry, but I just couldnt get into the game. I tried my heart out and it just didnt work for me. Again, every review ever made is based on someones opinion. Im sure a lot of people love this game. But ill tell you one thing, if you dont have a lot of spare time on your hands, youre not going to get anywhere in this game. It takes forever to get something accomplished. And when you die when youre in the middle of walking 400 miles to point B, you start back at point A. Yay I get to walk all the way back again!
All in all, the game is tiring. The only part I loved was when I blew up M******. Cant say the name bc it would be a spoiler. But that was awesome ill give it that much. Other than that, yeah I turned the game. Im glad I still dont have it, I got like $30 for it.
Hoping Fallout 4 is more multiplayer friendly.
great game just could have been better if it was more of a multi-player setting - run with the idea though definitely great game.
